How to get rid of bindii before spring prickles arrive

If you have ever crossed the lawn barefoot in spring and copped a prickle in the foot, you have met bindii. It is the most hated lawn weed in Adelaide for good reason, and here is the part most people get wrong: by the time the prickles hurt, it is already too late to do much about them. The battle against bindii is won or lost in winter, which means right now.

Know your enemy

Bindii (also called jo jo or onehunga) is a small winter weed that germinates through autumn and winter. In its early stage it is easy to miss. It sits low in the lawn as a little rosette of ferny, carrot-like leaves, soft and completely harmless underfoot. Through late winter it flowers, and each flower matures into a seed pod packed with hard spines. Those pods dry out as the weather warms, and that is what buries itself in bare feet, paws and picnic blankets from spring onwards.

One plant produces a lot of seed, and the seed drops right where the plant grew. Leave bindii alone for a season and next year’s crop is guaranteed to be worse.

Why winter is the window

Everything about bindii control comes down to timing. Treat it now, while the plant is young and has not set seed, and it dies easily with nothing left behind. Wait until the prickles are already formed and killing the plant achieves very little, because the pods stay in the lawn and stay sharp whether the weed is alive or not.

July and August are the sweet spot in Adelaide. The plants are up and visible if you look closely, they are still soft, and the seed pods have not hardened. This is the time to act.

How to deal with it

For a light infestation, hand weeding works. The rosettes pull out easily from damp soil, roots and all. Get them before they flower and you have removed next spring’s prickles entirely.

For anything more widespread, a selective broadleaf herbicide is the practical option. Products sold as bindii and clover killers target the weed without harming the grass, with one important catch: check the label matches your lawn type. Buffalo lawns need a buffalo-safe formulation, because standard broadleaf sprays will damage them. Kikuyu and couch handle the common products fine. Spray on a still, dry day, keep kids and pets off until it has fully dried, and expect the weeds to yellow off over the following week or two.

A follow-up treatment three to four weeks later catches the stragglers that germinated after the first pass.

The lawn itself is your best defence

Bindii is an opportunist. It gets established where the lawn is thin, patchy or cut too short, because that is where seed finds bare soil and sunlight. A dense, healthy lawn crowds most of it out before it ever gets going.

That is where a steady mowing rhythm earns its keep. Cutting weekly or fortnightly, never removing more than a third of the leaf at a time, keeps the grass thick and the soil shaded. Scalping the lawn or letting it grow out and then hacking it back does the opposite, opening up exactly the gaps that bindii loves. The lawns we see with the worst prickle problems are almost always the ones that spent winter neglected.

While you are at it, keep an eye out for bindii’s winter mates. Winter grass, clover, creeping oxalis and cudweed all thrive in the same cool, damp conditions, and the same logic applies to all of them: knock them down while they are young and before they seed.
